These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.
1 John 5:13 NKJV
Family,
Every Christian desires to have an assurance of salvation, that is, the certainty that when Jesus Christ returns or when death comes, they will go to be with the Lord Jesus in heaven. When John wrote this letter, he affirmed that God’s people may have that assurance. In this first letter that John wrote to the church, he identified nine ways for us to know that we are in a saving relationship with Jesus Christ.
- We have assurance of salvation if we believe on the name of the Son of God. (1John 5:13)
- We have assurance of salvation if we submit to Jesus as Lord of our lives and sincerely purpose to obey His commandments. (1 John 2:3)
- We have assurance of salvation if we love the Father and the Son rather than the world and overcome the influence of the world. (1 John 2:15-16)
- We have assurance of salvation if we habitually and persistently practice righteousness rather than sin. (1 John 2:29)
- We have assurance of salvation if we love our brothers and sisters. (1 John 3:14)
- We have assurance of salvation if we are conscious of the Holy Spirit dwelling within us. (1 John 3:24)
- We have assurance of salvation if we humbly follow Jesus’ example and live as He lived. (1 John 2:6)
- We have assurance in salvation if we believe, accept and remain in the Word of Life whom is the living Jesus Christ. (1 John 1:1)
- We have assurance of salvation if we earnestly long and hope for Jesus Christ’s return to receive us to Himself. (1John 3:2-3)
Therefore, if you aren’t sure that you are a Christian or uncertain of your salvation, ask yourself; “Have I honestly committed my life to Jesus as my Savior and Lord.” If you have, then by faith, you can know with certainty you are a child of God and have eternal life.
However, if you have not, please know that you can have the assurance of salvation by confessing with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is believing in your heart that makes you right with God, and it’s by confessing with your mouth that you are saved. (Romans 10:9-10)
