Refine me Lord

Family,

We may often sing lyrics to a song and not grasp the impact of what we are singing.  The other day, I was singing the lyrics “Set a fire down in my soul, that I can’t contain, I can’t control. I want more of you God. I want more of you God”.  I began to ponder the lyrics and the word fire stood out to me.  I began searching scriptures to gain better understanding as to why would I want God to set a fire down in my soul.  I read the passage of scripture in Malachi 2-3 NKJV:

2 But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He is like a refiner’s fire and like launderers’ soap. 3 He will sit as a refiner and a purifier of silver; He will purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer to the Lord an offering in righteousness.

In the process of refining metals, the new metal is heated with fire until it melts.  The impurities separate from the metal and rises to the surface. The impurities are then skimmed from the top. There would be no purifying without heating and melting.

Therefore, when we sing the lyrics “set a fire down in my soul” are we saying to God, “Here I am. I’m full of impurities, refine me?  Wash me with launderer’s soap that every stain of sin may be washed away.” Are we asking God to purify us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness? Are we asking God to purge us; to clean us from the inside out?

As we sing these lyrics unto God, “Set a fire down in my soul, that I can’t contain, I can’t control.  I want more of you God. I want more of you God”.  Please know, God will turn up the heat and the heat will be hot, making us uncomfortable.  However, if we submit to the heat and the purifying process, our lives will be transformed, making our character become more like Christ.

In His Service,

Pastor Rose
