forgiveness

Family,

Webster defines forgiveness as the ability to stop feeling anger toward someone who has done wrong toward you, to stop blaming someone and to stop requiring payment of money that is owed.

God is very clear about forgiveness.  He gives us specific instructions through numerous scriptures which can be summed up in one word-forgive. God says “And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive your trespasses.  But, if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses” (Mark 11:25-26).

“Judge not, and you shall not be judged.  Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned.  Forgive, and you will be forgiven” (Luke 6:37).

This we understand. However, the question is “Wonder if the person we need to forgive is ourselves?”  Sometimes the hardest thing for us to do is to forgive ourselves when we have done wrong; especially when we knew better. We tend to be our worse critics. We continuously beat ourselves up even when others have long forgiven us. Instead of beating ourselves up over and over again, let us learn from our mistakes, ask God to forgive us from our wrong doing and move forward.

1 John 1:9 says: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness”. Therefore, when we come before God with a repentant heart, we can have comfort in knowing that God is a forgiving God and will forgive our sins and trespasses.

We must understand that Satan is the accuser of the brethren.  He wants us to condemn ourselves. Because of guilt or even shame, we remove ourselves from God’s purpose and plan for our lives. God desires for us to know that He cares for each and every one of us. We can turn all our worries over to Him. If we can come to understand that when we cry out to God to forgive us of the wrongs that we have done that He truly forgives us, we will be set free from the chains that hold us in bondage. Then we can truly sing: No more shackles. No more chains. No more bondage. I AM FREE.

In His Service,
