Family,

As we celebrate Christmas, let’s not be so consumed with our traditions that we fail to reflect on the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. As we reflect, let’s take note that the Bible doesn’t state a specific month or date when His birth occurred.

The question then may be asked, “Why do we celebrate Christmas on December 25th?”

In reading several articles, I learned the Ancient Romans actually celebrated two holidays in the month of December. The first was Saturnalia, which was a two-week festival honoring Saturn which was their god of agriculture during the winter solstice and on December 25th, they celebrated the birth of Mithra, their sun god.

During Saturnalia, work and business came to a halt. Schools and courts of law closed, and the normal social patterns were suspended. People decorated their homes with wreaths and other greenery and shed their traditional togas in favor of colorful clothes known as synthesis. Romans spent Saturnalia gambling, singing, playing music, feasting, socializing, and giving each other gifts.

By 336 A.D., the Christians in Rome leaned toward celebrating the pagan festival of Saturnalia so the Roman church established the festival of Christmas on December 25th to celebrate and remember the birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. The name 'Christmas' comes from the Mass of Christ. A Mass service (which is sometimes called Communion or Eucharist) is where Christians remember that Jesus died for us and then came back to life. Many of the Saturnalia festival customs were adopted by Christians in their celebration of Christmas.

As we take time to remember the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, let’s not focus on the date but rather why He came. Jesus came so that we may have life and that we may have it more abundantly. When we gaze at the beautiful lights, let’s be reminded that Jesus is the light of the world. Whoever follows Him will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.
